Stanley Sweetheart Sweepstakes

1st January, 2016

Well the Christmas period got the best of me i'm afraid. I did manage to get some behind-the-scenes stuff done, but not as much as i'd hoped to. Apologies for that!

There's still a couple of dozen or so makers to include from the old Planemaker's Database site, but most of them have been added here. I'll try to get on to the last of them ASAP. I've also started to format and upload the remainder of the British 'C' manufacturers.

I have managed to collate a large amount of U.S. makers/manufacturers (for 'A') and I'm slowly going through the formatting of those to add to the site. I've also compiled a list of all the Australian manufacturers (from 'A' to 'Z') but I'll only upload enough to complete the 'A's, 'B's & 'C's, in accordance with the rest of the site thus far.

I ask you to, again, be patient as this is quite a huge job, and thanks for visiting and the various messages of encouragement that I have received over the past few months. I really appreciate it.

Oh, and welcome to 2016! Let's hope it will be a good one!

5th November, 2015

I'm still in the middle of merging the old to the new so I should have that done in the next few days or so. I will then complete the remaining British entries for 'C', before starting on the entries for 'D'.

In the background I'm working on the American entries for 'A' and hope to complete that by next week. It's my short-term goal to have both British and American manufacturers sync up, so I will probably continue to work on the American entries until all entries for 'B' and 'C' are done. That way I can advance through the alphabet (for both countries) one letter at a time.

I might also throw in the Australian manufacturers and sync them up to their British and American counterparts before moving on to 'D'.

Though I've not finished transferring everything over from the old site, I've set up a redirect so that searchers going to that site will automatically be redirected to this one. Needless to say traffic has jumped - not that there's a lot of traffic to speak of, but there is some...

As far as British planemakers go, all of 'A' and 'B' are done and I'm partway through 'C'. Support pages have been updated ('About', 'Sitemap', some index pages etc.), but no 'Related Pages' have been added yet. These will mainly take the form of galleries of existing examples of the planes for a given manufacturer/planemaker.

It's been difficult to work out the overall structure and how the site will function in regards to navigation. To tell you the truth I've really been working this over in my mind for the past few years, on and off, while I've been doing other sites. I'm still not 100% sure of how it will go together, but I think I've finally worked out the main gist of it.

I've decided to forego a search box because I do not believe it will return effective results. For instance, if the user were to do a search for 'Bailey' then a whole lot of vaugly-related results would be returned when all the user really wants is a page on 'Bailey'. With this in mind I've decided to set up a tagging system whereby results can be returned on a more general basis, such as 'Alphabetical' or 'American Manufacturers', or even manufacturers/planemakers from a particular date, state, county or city. I think this would be the more effective way to go.

With this in mind I've started to collect the various data from the old site and transfer it across to the new domain. It's slow going but I'll get there eventually.

21st October, 2015

I've finally got around to doing something with this site. I've transferred the domain from the old Handplane installation to stand-alone installation - mainly because the database for this site will be huge and I need to be able to scale effectively. I hope to be able to knock the foundation of this site together over the next few days or so. That's the plan anyway!

12th August, 2011

Initial setup of the site. Basic & generic theme added. Some (very) random manufacturer pages established but no information added yet.

27th September, 2010

Launch. Stop. That's it I'm afraid.
